As businesses scramble to find ways to appeal to an eco-savvy consumer base, they are falling victim to ill-informed and simplistic solutions that really aren’t doing anything to protect the environment, and are effectively misleading consumers in the process.

As a small brand owner it’s unlikely you will have the finances in place to do a full Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) on your packaging - they can cost anything from thousands to millions! Eco-packaging suppliers will offer all sorts of solutions, from fully recyclable mono-material pouches, to Kraft paper bags lined with bioplastics to organic latex-lined paper bottles. 

Packaging suppliers and manufacturers are marketing their products as biodegradable and compostable to manage the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. In the face of growing competition for businesses, there is a real risk that brand owners and consumers could be easily misled - here's my take on the topic.
